Wilshaw were contacted by Saracen Gold Mines management seeking assistance with the mining method for their primary return air rise. Following Saracens decision to stop conventional shaft sinking methods Saracen were left with no primary ventilation system and an underground gold mine in full production. Wilshaw suggested raise boring the vent shaft and lining the entire shaft with steel can liners.
The construction of the vent shaft involved raiseboring the shaft to 4.5m in diameter and then lowering the steel can liner supports (35m in total length) down into the underground workings and pouring grout behind the cans to cast them into place.
Wilshaw were employed to provide the engineering designs, certification and fabrication of the cans and assist in the installation methodology.Contact Us
